While we enjoy long days on the mountain in August; it is the best time to plan ahead for December Holidays!  In the winter, the villages of the Dolomites come alive with Alp-horns, sleigh rides, warm fires, and hot mulled wine.  Local Christmas markets and festivals abound.  December also marks the beginning of ski season on Alpe di Siusi.  There is sure to be activities to entertain everyone

High in the Dolomites the village of Kompatch hosted an after-party following Wednesday s Moonlight Classic XC races.  Great fun with wine and beer tasting followed by a fashion show of the most beautiful ski and sportswear.  Live music, dancing and mulled wine finished off a wonderful time on Alpe di Siusi!

On Wednesday the 19th of January, I watched with hundreds of others as XC skiers from over 11 countries competed in the annual ski marathon, the Moonlight Classic.  The race is held in the evening of the full moon of January each year.  The event begins at 8:00pm along a course of either 36 or 20 kms.  Held high on the Alpe Di Siusi, in the heart of the Italian Alps, the event draws skiers and spectators from all over.  People are attracted not only for the race, but for the alphorns, moonlit scenery, and of course the food, beer and hot mulled wine found in the beerhall set up for the event.  Even the gondola from the village of Siusi far below stays open until the early morning hours so that everyone can enjoy!

We are just a couple of days away from the official openning of the slopes on Alpe di Siusi, Italy.  As I look out over the hills from the beautiful Hotel SeelAus, I see the lifts running and the runs being groomed!  Although the official start is December 5, everything is ready to go for both alpine and XC skiing.  Come on up and join us!

High in the Alps we're enjoying the last days of summer/fall with hikes through fields and forests turning golden red against a backdrop of evergreens.  Next month will bring the first snows of winter, signaling the approach of Ski season!!
